Privacy policy
Plain English. No dark patterns. Here is what we collect, what we never collect, and how to get your data out.
What we collect
- Cloudflare analytics. Anonymous, aggregate page-view counts. No cookies. No cross-site tracking. No device fingerprinting.
- First-party site analytics. See "How our own analytics work" below for exactly what this includes.
- Save and vote actions, if logged in. When sign-in ships and you actively bookmark a business or vote on a ranking, that action is tied to your account so the feature can work.
- Claim form submissions. If you use the business claim form, we collect what you submit (business name, email, phone, message, attestation) to verify your claim.
- Newsletter subscriptions. If you subscribe to the newsletter, we collect your email address and consent record.
How our own analytics work
Alongside Cloudflare's aggregate layer above, we run a small first-party analytics system of our own, hosted on our own infrastructure, so we can see which pages and searches are actually useful. Here's exactly what that involves.
- What we collect. The page you visited, how long you were actively engaged with it, the terms you type into our search box plus how many results they returned, the destination of any outbound click to a business's website, a coarse country code, and whether you're on a mobile or desktop device.
- Your identifier. We store a randomly generated id in
your browser's local storage, under the key
bons_sid, and it automatically rotates to a new random value every 24 hours. It is not your name, email, or account, and we never share it. - What we do not collect this way. We do not read or store your IP address or your browser's raw user-agent string, and none of this feeds any third-party advertising or cross-site tracking network.
- Search terms. We store what you type as typed, with one exception: anything that looks like an email address is automatically redacted before it's stored. Please don't type personal information into the search box.
- Opt-out. If your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, none of this is collected: no listeners run, nothing is written to storage, and no data leaves your browser.
What we do not collect
- We do not sell personal data. Ever. Not aggregated, not anonymized, not at all.
- We do not run third-party ad trackers or pixels.
- We do not load third-party analytics beyond Cloudflare's privacy-respecting layer; our own analytics, described above, is first-party and stays on our infrastructure.
- We do not share newsletter subscriber lists with anyone.
- We do not require an account to browse, read, or use the site.
Your data, your choice
You can request a copy of your data, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email privacy@bestofnorthseattle.com with the email address tied to your account or submission. We respond within 7 days.
Children
This site is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a minor has submitted data, email us and we will remove it.
Changes
If we materially change this policy, we will update the "Last updated" date below and, for substantive changes, post a notice on the homepage.
